The outdoor kitchen that fails usually fails in its second winter. A tile counter spalls at the edge where water wicked in and froze. A cabinet door warps off its hinge. The problem was never the cooking equipment. The problem was that the kitchen was furnished rather than built.

The appliance tier has thinned and strengthened. Water lines need to drain by gravity to a below-frost dry well or a shut-and-drain valve inside the house, and the serious builds add compressed-air stubs to blow the lines dry every fall. Every fixture, from the sink faucet to the ice maker, needs to be on the winterization checklist with clear access, because a frozen line inside a masonry island is a demolition repair.

Power deserves its own respect: dedicated circuits for each major appliance, GFCI protection, and conduit sized for future additions, because outdoor rooms accrete equipment the way garages do.

Shelter, Light, and Heat

The finished room earns its season extension from above and beside.
